The Major Differences

(P6 to SEC1)

Fewer Components: The English paper at the Secondary Level has fewer components compared to PSLE English. Sections like Grammar MCQ, Vocabulary MCQ, Vocabulary-Cloze MCQ, Grammar Cloze Comprehension Cloze, and Synthesis are not present.

Harder Questions: The components removed are the easy question types. They are either the MCQ or fill-in-the-blanks sections. Secondary school students are now expected to produce very precise language to score in all other more demanding major sections of the Secondary Level English paper.

Common Transition Problems

Poorer English Grade: Based on our observation, most students who score an A for PSLE usually get a B grade in Secondary 1. Those who get a B or C for PSLE English struggle even more.

Neglect in Vocabulary: While spelling tests are routine in primary schools, teachers now expect students to learn vocabulary more independently. Sadly, most students neglect this for the entire 4-year period.

When All Is Too Late: At the end of 4 years in secondary school, right before the O Level exam, it is common to see how students' English language proficiency hasn't improved much since PSLE.
